UPDATE: Charges laid after Black Mercedes recovered in London

A London man is facing several charges including drug possession and failing to stop for police in connection with a car theft investigation that started in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent police previously reported that a black 2012 Mercedes that was stolen from a residence in on Turquoise Court earlier this week turned up in London.

Since then, London police have released more information about the case.

Officers said a 35-year-old London man was arrested on Wednesday after a London police officer saw a black Mercedes C6G drive past him in the area of Adelaide Street and Ada Street. When the officer ran a check of the license plate, he learned that the vehicle was reported stolen from Chatham earlier in the day.

Members of the London Police Service's Traffic Management Unit attempted to stop the vehicle on Dundas Street, but the driver allegedly refused to pull over.

The suspect eventually stopped the vehicle on Second Street near Hartlet Street and then took off running, but he was arrested a short distance away.

Police said they found 14.3 grams of suspected fentanyl in his possession, adding that he also had someone else's identification.

As a result of the investigation, the accused was charged with several offences including drug trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, and failing to stop for police.

The accused was later released with a future court date.
