It will be better late than never for one Windsor-Essex tradition.
The City of Windsor announced Monday that the annual installation of the Charles Brooks Memorial Peace Fountain at Coventry Gardens will take place this week, a few weeks behind schedule due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The fountain, the biggest floating fountain on an international boundary in the world, is usually installed in time for the Victoria Day weekend, but due to work restrictions imposed by the Ontario government due to the pandemic, the installation was classified as a non-essential work project.
Mayor Drew Dilkens said the installation of the fountain is important considering how this season has gone so far.
"With so many of our annual celebrations and traditions put on hold due to the pandemic, it is particularly meaningful that we will be installing the Peace Fountain, a signature Windsor institution," said Dilkens.
When the fountain is operational, water shoots up to 70 feet in the air. An array of coloured lights, when activated, makes the fountain visible at night.
The work is expected to be completed by Saturday.
