Parents and guardians are being allowed into schools starting this week to retrieve their child's personal belongings.
Lambton Kent District School Board Director John Howitt said families will be allowed in by appointment only.
He said each school has sent out instructions following a strict process and recommendations approved by health units in Lambton County and Chatham-Kent.
"We've limited the number of time slots for families to come," said Howitt. "They'll be checked in at the front door of the school or the marked door and families will be asked to go as quickly as possible to the classrooms, gather the belongings in their backpack or bag that they bring and then exit the building."
He said elementary teachers have done their best to organize student items.
"They've been gathering the students' personal belongings either into a student cubby or on the desk. In the secondary panel, the bulk of those belongings are in student lockers, so those will be in the condition the student left them."

Howitt said pickups will be accommodated until the end of the month if needed.
Anyone unable to come at a scheduled time is asked to contact the school principal.
Elementary and secondary schools did not reopen after the March break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last month, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced they would remain closed through the end of the current school year.
