Ontario's police watchdog has called off its investigation after a 34-year-old man dislocated his shoulder in an attempt to run from Chatham-Kent police.
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit said the reported incident happened on April 28.
An officer tried to pull over a pick-up truck that was reported stolen, but the driver allegedly sped westbound on Selkirk Street in Chatham. The chase was called off near the intersection of Selkirk Street and Victoria Avenue.
The SIU's report stated the suspect continued onto Hillyard Street and abandoned the vehicle on someone's lawn. He allegedly ran through backyards and jumped over fences.
The 34-year-old eventually surrendered to police but later complained about some pain. After being taken to a hospital, he was diagnosed with a dislocated right shoulder.
“Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries to date, I am satisfied that there is patently nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer is concerned in connection with the man’s injury," said SIU Director Joseph Martino in a report. "The man’s injury occurred when he jumped from a fence and fell. On this record, there is no nexus between the conduct of any police officer and the man’s dislocated shoulder."
As a result, the investigation file is officially closed.
Chatham-Kent police previously said the 34-year-old was charged with over a dozen offences after he was allegedly found with some suspected crystal methamphetamine and fentanyl.
