Expanding testing in Huron and Perth

The Medical Officer of Health for Huron and Perth says she's not surprised by the increase in COVID-19 cases in Ontario over the last week.

During her news conference Monday, Dr. Mariam Klassen pointed out that more people with symptoms were tested in the last week or two.

"We expanded our testing to more symptomatic people, so I'm expecting when we test people with symptoms, we're going to find some cases. So that little bump up is a little concerning and now we need to see what happens in the next week or two," said Klassen.

She acknowledges the little bump up is concerning so the next week or two will be telling. But she also points out that any time a change is made, like relaxing some restrictions or allowing some stores to open, you have to allow a week or two to see what the impact will be.

Klassen also says she understands that it's more difficult for some people to isolate than others and why people who live in a big city and are trapped in their apartment are likely getting a little tired of isolation and so were anxious to take advantage of the weather this weekend and get out. But she also points out, the virus doesn't get tired.

"I also know that the virus is not tired and we need to continue with the precautions and because the case numbers have gone down and we've done a good job of flattening the curve, doesn't mean we can stop," added Klassen.

Klassen says it's still very important to stay home if we're sick and continue to distance ourselves from other people, wear masks and wash our hands as often as possible.
