Huron OPP arrest suspect in rifle theft

Huron County Ontario Provincial Police officers arrested and charged an Exeter resident with several offences connected to a break, enter and theft in Exeter.

On Friday, May 15, 2020, a victim reported to police someone entered his Saunders Street home and stole a rifle and ammunition.

As it turned out the police had received a call earlier in the day from a witness that reported seeing someone walking down Victoria Street West with a rifle and a box of ammunition. At that point in time, the suspect was spoken to however he denied any knowledge of the firearm.

Following some additional investigation, the police returned and spoke with the suspect. This time the suspect was arrested and a search was conducted. The stolen rifle and ammunition were recovered.

A 23-year-old man from Exeter has been charged with Break & Enter, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000, Possession of a Firearm Obtained by Crime, Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm and Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose.

He remains in custody with a court appearance scheduled for May 19, 2020.

Huron OPP would like to remind firearms owners that it is their legal duty and responsibility to safely and securely store firearms and ammunition in their possession.
