The number of COVID-19 related deaths in London and Middlesex County has increased by two.
The Middlesex London Health Unit said Tuesday a woman in her 60s and a man in his 80s are the latest to succumb to the virus. The woman was a resident of an area retirement home, while the man lived in long-term care.
Their deaths bring the total number of people in the region to die from the virus to 45. That includes 18 deaths in local nursing homes and seven deaths in retirement facilities.
There were two new cases of COVID-19 confirmed by the health unit on Tuesday, bringing the total number of local cases to 458.
The London Health Sciences Centre currently has 25 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in its care - ten at University Hospital, 14 at Victoria Hospital, and one at Children's Hospital. Five of those patients are listed in the intensive care unit.
The number of resolved cases has increased to 303.
In Elgin and Oxford counties, there was one new case of COVID-19 reported. It is that area's first new case since Friday and brings the total number of cases to 63. There were no new deaths recorded on Tuesday. The area's death toll stands at four, according to Southwestern Public Health. Forty-seven of the cases have been resolved.
Ontario public health officials are reporting an upward trend in the number of daily cases. Over the last 24 hours, 361 new cases were confirmed. That is an increase over the 308 cases reported on Monday and 294 cases on Sunday.
There were 56 additional deaths, bringing the total number of people to die from the virus in the province to 1,725.
The total number of confirmed cases is 20,907, with 15,391 recoveries.
According to the latest epidemiological summary, 12.7 per cent of all cases have resulted in hospitalization. Currently, there are 1,025 patients in hospital with the virus, 192 in intensive care.
The virus continues to take a devastating toll on long-term care homes in Ontario. There have been 249 outbreaks within the facilities, with 812 deaths among residents.
A total of 3,485 health-care workers in Ontario have tested positive for the virus.
