Police Week will look a little different this year as officers won't be interacting directly with the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, residents are being given an inside look as to who some of the frontline workers are within the Chatham-Kent Police Service (CKPS).
CKPS has launched a series called "WE Are YOU" in order to share personal information about some first responders.
"We hope that this initiative reinforces the fact that behind the uniform, we are just like you," stated a CKPS media release.
The initiative marks the start of Police Week, which is recognized across the country.
Police Chief Gary Conn said local officers have been working alongside other first responders and health care professionals "during this unprecedented health challenge."
“Police Week was first observed in 1970 and coincides with the Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is recognized internationally on May 15. While the COVID-19 pandemic means that our members will not be out and engaging with members of our community as they have traditionally done during Police Week, we invite the public to reach out through social media or other means that use appropriate social distancing to thank our police officers and members for all they do to keep our communities safe,” said Conn.
The first personal story CKPS is sharing is that of Chief Conn. He previously served with the Canadian Armed Forces as a Commissioned Officer. He and his wife, Anne-Marie, have three sons.
In addition to his responsibilities within CKPS, Conn is also working towards a Doctor of Education degree at Western University.
