More than a dozen new COVID-19 cases in London-area

Public health officials in London and Middlesex County reported 13 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday.

According to the Middlesex London Health Unit, one of the newly confirmed cases involves a resident in a local retirement home. There have now been 50 cases in retirement facilities - 36 among residents and 15 among staff. There were no new cases in area long-term care homes, which have previously recorded 86 cases - 53 involving residents and 33 involving staff.

Since the outbreak began there have been 456 cases of COVID-19 in the London region. Of those, 420 were in London, 19 were in Strathroy Caradoc, seven in Middlesex Centre, four each in North Middlesex and Thames Centre, and one each in Lucan Biddulph and Southwest Middlesex.

The London Health Sciences Centre has 24 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in its care. Five of those patients are listed in intensive care.

There have been 43 deaths related to the virus, but no new deaths reported over the past 24 hours.

A total of 299 people who previously tested positive for the virus have since recovered, according to the health unit.

Southwestern Public Health, the health unit for Elgin and Oxford counties, hasn't seen any new cases or deaths since Friday. Its total number of confirmed cases is 62, with four deaths. Forty-seven of the cases have been resolved.

Provincially, the number of new cases crept up by 308, with 35 additional deaths reported on Monday.

Ontario has now seen a total of 20,546 cases of COVID-19 and 1,669 deaths.

The number of recoveries has gone up to 15,131.

According to the latest epidemiological summary, 43.1 per cent of all the cases in Ontario are in people 60 years of age and older. Those over the age of 80 have taken the biggest hit from COVID-19, with 1,174 deaths in that age group. Currently, there are 1,027 people who have been hospitalized due to the virus, 147 in intensive care on ventilators.

The number of outbreaks reported at long-term care homes now sits at 245. Long-term care homes in London with confirmed outbreaks include Earls Court Village, Elmwood Place, Henley Place, Kensington Village, Meadow Park, and PeopleCare Oakcrossing London.
