Prom is On! Students unite across the country to raise funds

Just because the pandemic has cancelled prom this year does not mean teens need to let that suit and tie or dress go to waste.

Student leaders across Canada, partnered with Student Life Network, are organizing a special live-stream event this year that will raise money for Kids Help Phone.

Mira Gillis, a grade 12 student at F.J. Brennan Catholic High School in Windsor, is one of those organizing the event for May 26. She told BlackburnNews.com there are three ways students can take part in Prom is On 2020.

Participants in the Prom Wave on Tik Tok are encouraged to use the hashtag #PromisOn2020 and record themselves dancing to "Finesse" by Bruno Mars. The second way is to post on Instagram to your friends, and finally, tuning into the live-streamed event for giveaway prizes.

While it is not a prom in the traditional sense, she said dressing up is encouraged.

"I'm going to be dressed up in all my prom gear because I'm not letting that dress go to waste," she laughed.

So far, Gillis is not sure how many will participate but said the response from the students at her school has been very positive.

"It's not going to be the same as the regular prom where we're actually seeing each other in person," she said. "Everybody's pretty happy to be able to participate in something that is going to keep everybody safe but at the same time, have a good time, and just overall be able to have something rather than have nothing."

Students can sign up online.
