Lambton’s top doc encourages physically distanced Mother's Day celebrations

Lambton's medical officer of health says there are still plenty of ways to celebrate Mother's Day this year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During a media briefing Friday, Dr. Sudit Ranade agreed that a visit in the yard with mom, six to eight feet away, is probably okay.

"To be honest, I think it probably may have been anyway. I mean, none of that stuff was really prohibited if you're able to maintain physical distance and it's not a gathering."

Dr. Ranade said there are ways to convey the emotions around Mother's Day to your parent while also meeting physical distancing measures.

"Say potentially, save the gathering that you might have for later, but it doesn't mean that people couldn't have social interaction with their mom while they're trying to keep the physical distancing and try to stick to the guidelines. I think there is a way to do it, it's going to look a little bit different based on how everyone negotiates that with their parents, but I think it's possible."

Dr. Ranade added, there are some people who still need to be very carefully protected.

"So for example, if you have a person who has really underlying illness who may be very vulnerable, it's very important to keep protecting those people, even if they live in their homes and not in a long-term care home or something. Having said that, there are still ways to do this and achieve the physical distancing, and if people can do that to the extent that they can, that's what we would ask of them."
