Chatham-Kent police are reminding drivers not to treat roadways like racetracks just because there is less traffic.
"Please slow down, before a speed-related crash ends in tragedy," Chatham-Kent Police Services said in a news release issued Thursday.
The warning comes after charges were laid against a couple of drivers during separate incidents on Wednesday.
A 29-year-old Tilbury man was allegedly caught driving faster than 138 kilometres per hour in a 90 km/h zone. Chatham-Kent police said the driver was stopped on Middle Line, just outside of Valetta. He was charged with speeding. Officers said a young child and another passenger were also in the vehicle at the time.
About an hour later, officers stopped a vehicle for speeding on Wheatley Road. A 30-year-old Leamington man was allegedly driving 132 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. The 30-year-old was charged with stunt driving, which resulted in an automatic licence suspension and vehicle impoundment for seven days.
The Leamington driver will have to answer to the charge at Provincial Offences Court on July 29.
