Walkerton hospital reopens admissions to non-COVID patients

Walkerton Hospital will be reopen to admissions of non-COVID/non-respiratory patients starting Tuesday.

The South Bruce Grey Health Centre had designated the Acute Care Units at both the Walkerton and Kincardine site as dedicated COVID units in preparation of a surge of patients. That surge has not materialized, due in part to the pandemic impacting long-term care homes.

Durham and Chesley hospitals are seeing a steady increase in the number of patients there while Kincardine and Walkerton sites have very low patient volumes.

On Monday, the South Bruce Grey Health Centre announced it is returning Walkerton to a non-COVID hospital in order to alleviate the pressure on the other sites.

Officials note the emergency departments at all hospitals are operating as usual and patients should go to their nearest hospital if they need care.

Kincardine will remain a designated COVID hospital.
