COVID-19 recovery rate nearing half in Sarnia-Lambton

Nearly half of all the confirmed COVID-19 cases in Sarnia-Lambton have recovered.

As of Sunday night, there were 170 confirmed cases, of which 80 have now recovered, according to Lambton Public Health. That's up from 167 cases reported Saturday night.

The death toll remained at 14, unchanged for a full week now.

A total of five cases are confirmed now at Vision Nursing Home in Sarnia, where an outbreak was declared Thursday, April 23.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Sudit Ranade told Sue Storr on CHOK (103.9 FM, 1070 AM) Monday morning that testing has been ramped-up at the Wellington Street facility.

"We're getting some of those test results back now, and some of those came back positive," said Ranade. "So they're standing at three residents and two staff."

The numbers at Sarnia's Landmark Village retirement home were unchanged Monday with a total of 39 cases, including 30 residents, and six deaths. An outbreak at Petrolia's Meadowview Villa was declared over last Thursday.

Dr. Ranade described the long-term care outbreaks locally as manageable.

"Right now we've got these three that have happened but if you think about this coronavirus thing as extending through several months it's possible that we'll have more of these sort of sporadically. So I wouldn't say this is the end but certainly, I think what's going on right now is fairly manageable."

To date, Lambton Public Health has received results from 1,758 tests and 90 percent of them have been negative.

Monday morning, Bluewater Health reported that there were 12 patients in hospital with the virus, and 13 suspected of having it with tests pending.
