The St. Clair Catholic District School Board is lending a helping hand by donating food and personal protective equipment (PPE) to organizations within Chatham-Kent and Sarnia.
With students not in schools as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the board opted to empty its facilities of any unused non-perishable items in order to donate them. Food items were delivered to the Inn of the Good Shepherd in Sarnia and Chatham Outreach for Hunger. Non-perishables from schools in smaller communities were also donated to food banks within their district.
“We know there are many families who rely on student nutrition programs when students are in school,” said Deb Crawford, director of education. “It’s important that we get whatever food items are currently going unused in schools into the hands of our community partners who are helping to supply children and families with food.”

Boxes of face masks and more than 67,000 gloves were also delivered to the St. Clair College Healthplex in Chatham and the Clearwater Arena in Sarnia. The PPE donations will benefit several frontline workers at facilities such as hospitals, long-term care homes, and hospices.
“We are proud to do our part to assist the brave men and women in the health care sector,” said Crawford. “We are in their debt for the service they provide in helping to keep us all safe during this pandemic.”
The school board's Facility Services staff collected the items for donation, as deliveries started going out late last week and over the weekend.
