COVID-19 claims another life in London-area

For the third day in a row, there has been a COVID-19 related death in the London-area.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported the additional death, along with 20 newly confirmed cases of the virus on Monday. The latest death brings the total number of people who have died due to COVID-19 in the region to 11.

Since the outbreak began, there have been a total of 234 confirmed cases reported by the local health unit.

Of those cases, 26 were reported in long-term care homes, five in retirement homes, and 107 people who were infected have since recovered. Twenty-five people confirmed to have the virus remain in the care of the London Health Sciences Centre. Eleven of those patients are in intensive care – five at Victoria Hospital and six at University Hospital.

While no new cases of COVID-19 were reported Monday by Southwestern Public Health, there was one additional death. That brings the total number of deaths in Oxford and Elgin counties to three. A total of 35 people within the two counties have tested positive for the virus.

Provincially, there were an additional 421 newly confirmed cases and 17 new deaths related to COVID-19 to start the week. The total number of confirmed cases across Ontario has now risen to 7,470 since the outbreak began, with 291 deaths, according to provincial public health officials.

Of those sickened by the virus, 760 have been hospitalized, 203 of whom remain in intensive care on a ventilator. The number of cases that have been resolved has gone up to 3,357.

Outbreaks have been reported in 89 long-term care homes across the province.

Figures released by public health officials also indicate 813 of the confirmed cases in Ontario involve health care workers.
