Two more COVID-19 deaths in Windsor-Essex, cases total 141

Another two people have died of COVID-19, according to the Medical Officer of Health at the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, Dr. Wajid Ahmed.

That makes a total of three deaths so far.

Ahmed told reporters Friday, the additional two patients were residents at long-term care homes in the region.

As of Friday morning, there were 141 confirmed cases of the virus in Windsor-Essex.  So far, 1,334 people have been tested, the results of 218 tests have not yet come back.

Ahmed also released projections for the community, suggesting the number of cases could be in the thousands by the second or third week of April.

Projections show that in a community the size of Windsor-Essex there could have been 4,000 deaths by day 200 of the outbreak if no public health measures were implemented. However, strict physical distancing could decrease that number by 96 per cent. In total, 200,000 people could have been infected if no action was taken, however, strict physical distancing could bring that number down 95 per cent.

Ahmed said it is too soon to tell what impact the measures we have already taken will have on the number of people infected in the region.

"In the next week we expect to have more data to suggest where these numbers are heading," said Ahmed.

The WECHU projections show two to three months of strict physical distancing is needed to effectively flatten the curve in the region.
