Some areas in Wallaceburg and St. Clair Township might be closed off to the public temporarily as flooding concerns rise.
The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) issued a flood warning on Sunday as a result of high water levels and recent weather conditions.
Conservation officials said 20-50 millimetres of rain fell across the region between Saturday and Sunday.
"Strong winds are currently causing backflow in Wallaceburg and water levels are elevated over the top of the bank in that area," read a media release from SCRCA.
Water levels are expected to peak over the next 24-36 hours. In an effort to divert water from the Sydenham River to the St. Clair River, the gates to the McKeough Dam are being operated.
The conservation authority said conditions may lead to possible road closures. As a result, residents are asked to avoid the listed roads below:
- Otter Line, Nelson Street north of McKee, and Emily Street at Elizabeth in Wallaceburg - Waterworks Road north of Courtright Line - Stanley Line between Kimball Road and Waubuno Road - Pretty Road north of McCallum Line - Main Street in Mitchell’s Bay east of Hinkle Point Road, as well as several side streets in the village
Residents along the Lake St. Clair shoreline may also notice high water levels and powerful waves. Residents are also cautioned to avoid shorelines and flooded areas for safety reasons.
The flood warning will remain in effect until March 31.
