The Medical Officer of Health in Windsor-Essex has announced a fourth confirmed case of COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex.
Dr. Wajid Ahmed said the man in his 60s returned to Canada from abroad on March 15.
He was tested March 20 at the assessment centre at Windsor Regional Hospital's Ouellette Campus.
All four confirmed cases in Windsor-Essex have links to travel outside of Canada. There is no evidence of community transmission in the region as of yet, but Ahmed said additional steps will need to be taken if evidence comes forward.
For the time being, the Ministry of Health criteria stipulates that only those with travel history in the last 14 days be tested. Ahmed said as testing capacity in the province expands, testing criteria will also grow.
"We will see a change in the testing criteria, and testing guidelines from the ministry soon, and we will have further information to share with the community. At this point, I can say that the testing capacity is increasing across the province, and we will continue to see an increase, and when that is there, we will be able to do more testing in our community as well," said Ahmed.
Windsor-Essex County Health Unit CEO Theresa Marentette said 554 people have been tested in the region so far, and the results of 355 tests are pending.
As of Wednesday afternoon, there are 2,792 confirmed cases of the virus in Canada, and of those, 688 are in Ontario.
The Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday afternoon that there are Michigan reports 2,295 cases, including 705 in Detroit.
