Ford Canada recalls 54,000 vehicles for valve issue

The Ford Motor Company has issued a recall on thousands of vehicles sold in Canada, due to a hydraulic control issue.

The recall affects select 2006 to 2010 Ford Fusion midsize sedans, 2006 to 2010 Mercury Milan midsize sedans, and 2006 to 2010 Lincoln MKZ luxury sedans. A total of 54,292 vehicles, all sold in Canada, are involved.

The automaker said in some affected vehicles, a normally-closed valve inside the hydraulic control unit may stick open, which could result in extended brake pedal travel. This could increase the likelihood of a crash. Ford is aware of one collision report related to this issue.

The vehicles in question were built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico between February 2006, and mid-July, 2009.

Vehicle owners will receive a recall notice in the mail or by e-mail if their car is included. Dealers will inspect the hydraulic control unit and replace the unit if necessary, free of charge. The system will be pressure-flushed with DOT 4 brake fluid, and the DOT 3 reservoir cap will be replaced with a new DOT 4 cap.

The reference number for this recall is 20-S-14.
