Windsor urges residents to 'social distance' from garbage collectors

The City of Windsor is urging residents to use social distancing with those collecting your trash and recycling.

In a release by the city Monday afternoon, residents are asked to maintain at least a two-metre distance from garbage and recycling workers. The city's collection contractor, GFL, reported that residents are engaging the collectors in conversation and offering to help load.

The city said while the thought is appreciated, residents are reminded that social distancing is vital to slowing or stopping the spread of COVID-19, and are asking people to step back and let collectors do their jobs.

With people taking advantage of the stay-at-home guidelines for spring cleaning, the city is also asking people to keep adhering to the collection guidelines already in place, which include hard-sided containers weighing no more than 20 kilograms. Trash must also not be dumped loosely.

Windsor has also relaxed parking enforcement for on-street meters. Tickets are not being issued for metered parking but will continue to be written in parking lots and for people abusing accessible spaces.

The city also indicated Monday that many calls were received from people offering to volunteer their help where needed. Once more, the city appreciates the civic-minded people wishing to help. Still, in accordance with social distancing, any call for volunteers will be put out through official channels, including local media such as BlackburnNewsWindsor.com.
