Help coming for Canadians stuck abroad

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is promising that help is on the way for Canadians stranded overseas during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During a media conference Saturday morning, the Prime Minister said that the federal government is keeping in touch with Canadians who are currently overseas and providing them with important information.

"We've announced new funding to help people borrow up to $5,000 to return to Canada or to cover their needs while waiting to come home," he said. "Public servants are working around the clock to help people who are stranded."

According to Trudeau, the federal government is also working with Canadian airlines to make commercial flights more accessible to Canadians who are stuck abroad.

"We will also be working with other countries to ensure our airlines have the permission and other logistical measures necessary to take these flights," said Trudeau.

The first Air Canada flight is set to leave Morocco this weekend. Trudeau said Canada is working with other airline companies to reach similar agreements and is planning other flights in the coming days.

"A number of factors are being considered when we decide where the flights will leave from," he explained. "For example, the number of Canadians in a certain place, the closure of the airspace or the local situation. We can't necessarily bring everyone back but we will do as much as we can."

Several public health measures will be in place for any Canadians boarding the flights home. All passengers will be required to self-isolate for two weeks. In addition, anyone showing symptoms of COVID-19 will be unable to get on the plane.

Canadians currently abroad are being urged to register to Global Affairs Canada.
