Officials clarify what assessment centres are doing

Health officials in Grey and Bruce are clarifying what 'assessment' centres are and their purpose in screening for COVID-19.

During a telephone town hall hosted by Bruce Power Thursday night, President and CEO of Grey Bruce Health Services Gary Sims reviewed what someone can expect if going to an assessment center.

"These are screening centres, not testing centres," said Sims. "Unless you need to be admitted to the hospital, we expect, for the majority of people, will be able to go home, with self-care and self-isolation information."

There are three assessment centres set up at: The Owen Sound Regional Hospital and operating 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week The Kincardine Hospital and operating 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week The Hanover and District Hospital and operating 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Sims adds that at this time, they cannot put an assessment centre at every hospital in the province without affecting operations.

"We're responsible enough to provide the resources while maintaining the critical resources within those physical facilities," added Sims. "So while we wish we could put an assessment centre in every hospital, we're not able to do that at this time."
