Jump in COVID-19 testing

There has been a big jump in the number of people being tested for COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex, but there are still no confirmed cases of the virus in the region.

As of Tuesday morning, 96 people had been tested in the region, and 37 of those test results were outstanding.

The jump in the number of people receiving testing is due in large part to the opening of the new assessment centre at Windsor Regional Hospital Ouellette Campus. With assessment centres opening across the province, more testing is being done but results have also been delayed. Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said results are expected to take two to three days.

Chief Executive Officer of the Windsor Essex County Health Unit Theresa Marentette is reminding residents to only use the assessment centre after you have taken a few key steps. Use the online assessment tool provided by the Ontario government, and contact your primary health provider or Telehealth. They will provide you with your next step such as attending the local assessment centre.

“Only people with COVID-19 symptoms will be tested. We ask that employers please not send sick people to the assessment centre. This centre is to support travellers who have symptoms of COVID-19 and require testing,” said Marentette.

Anyone who has travelled outside of Canada, including the United States, is required to self-isolate for 14 days upon their return. Should they develop any symptoms while in isolation, like fever and/or cough, they should contact their primary health care provider or the Windsor Essex County Health Unit.

There are currently 441 cases of COVID-19 in Canada, and 177 cases in Ontario.

Meanwhile, Windsor Regional Hospital has issued an online visitor screening form for people to use when they visit the hospital. Simply print the form, fill it in, and bring it with you when you visit.
