CK asked to be vigilant as businesses adjust to COVID-19 response

Chatham-Kent residents are being asked to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity at neighbouring properties.

Several businesses have been told to close, including theatres, cinemas, facilities providing recreational programs, as well as bars and restaurants -- with the exception of take-out, drive-thru, and delivery services. The closures are in response to the COVID-19 pandemic after Premier Doug Ford declared a state of emergency on Tuesday.

Chatham-Kent police constable Renee Cowell said in an emailed statement that officers will continue to monitor all businesses, properties, and residences within the community on a constant basis. However, community members can help by reporting anything that seems suspicious.

"In these times of uncertainty and closures, we ask that everyone remain calm and vigilant. If you know that your neighbour is not home or that a local business is temporarily closed, please keep an eye on their property," said Cowell. "This is a time when we must come together as a community to keep everyone safe and healthy."

In the meantime, police are investigating a recent theft at Southside Tap and Grill in Chatham. Police said about $2,700 worth of meat and beer was reported stolen.
