Ontario drivers seem to be very happy the province increased speed limits on three 400-series highways.
Last September, speed limits were increased to 110 kilometres per hour on Highway 402 from London to Sarnia, the QEW from St. Catharines to Hamilton, and Highway 417 from Ottawa to the Quebec border.
Transport trucks are limited to 105 km/h.
A fourth location in northern Ontario could be announced later this spring.
So far, there are no plans to increase the speed limit on Highway 401.
"People are telling us loud and clear that they support a safe and moderate increase to speed limits on these highways," said Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney.
More than 8,300 people responded to a survey about the pilot project, and 80 per cent said they support the increase. Another 82 per cent said they would also support speed limit increases on other 400-series highways.
The government said it chose those locations because they required little to no upgrades and had at least three km between interchanges.
Six other provinces in Canada have speed limits of 110 km/h or higher. Ontario adjusted speed limits downwards in the 1970s in response to an oil crisis.
