Public health officials have confirmed three new cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Ontario, just one day after confirming two others.
Health officials said a 34-year-old woman with a recent travel history to Iran went to Mackenzie Health on February 27, one day after arriving in Toronto. The patient had "low severity of symptoms" and was sent home after certain protocols were taken. She now remains in self-isolation.
The other two patients who tested positive for COVID-19 -- a wife and husband -- went to Lakeridge Health Ajax Pickering. Health officials said a 51-year-old woman flew to Toronto from Iran on February 22 and went to an Ajax clinic on February 28, accompanied by her husband.
Health officials said the 69-year-old man had a cough but did not travel to Iran recently. He was masked and isolated. Both the husband and wife are now back home in self-isolation.
The number of confirmed cases in Ontario is now at 11. However, the first three cases announced have been resolved as each patient has tested negative for the virus in two consecutive tests, taken at least 24 hours apart.
Provincial health officials said based on global circumstances, Ontario is working with health partners in planning for the potential local spread of COVID-19. However, Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, maintains the risk being infected with COVID-19 in Ontario remains very low.
