Wanted suspect arrested after pursuit on Hwy. 401

Chatham-Kent OPP have made an arrest in connection with an investigation that temporarily shut down the westbound lanes of the Highway 401 near Chatham.

Provincial police said they were called in after getting a tip that a suspect who was wanted by another police service was on the westbound lanes of the highway in Chatham-Kent late Wednesday night.

Officers were able to track down the suspect's vehicle and attempted to pull it over, but the driver allegedly kept going, which police said resulted in a short, low-speed pursuit.

Police were able to stop the vehicle, at which time, the suspect allegedly rammed two OPP cruisers, causing "moderate damage."

Investigators said the suspect was eventually taken into custody with the help of the OPP Canine Unit and the Moraviantown Police Service.

One officer reported suffering minor injuries during the incident and was treated at the scene.

The westbound lanes of the Highway 401 were closed near Chatham for approximately two hours as a result of the incident, but they re-opened to traffic overnight.

The investigation is ongoing.
