Car chase in Chatham ends in arrest outside of the city

Chatham-Kent police have made an arrest after an early morning chase in Chatham involving a stolen vehicle.

Police said they first came across the vehicle early Friday morning as it was heading east on Grand Avenue East in Chatham.

Officers reportedly tried to block it off, but the suspect's vehicle allegedly hit the police cruiser before speeding off. Police said they followed the vehicle for a short time before stopping their pursuit for safety reasons.

Officers were able to track down the vehicle outside of Chatham in the area of Mull Road. By that time, it had already been abandoned and the suspect had fled the area.

Provincial police were then called in to help out with their K9 unit.

Investigators said police eventually tracked down the suspect after a homeowner found a man sleeping inside a second vehicle in the general area of the abandoned vehicle. According to police, the suspect took off running once the homeowner confronted him, but was arrested a short time later.

Police said the matter is still under investigation -- there is no word on charges yet.
