GM recalls over 600,000 pickups and SUVs over software flub

General Motors has issued a widespread recall of its pickup trucks and SUVs due to a software glitch involving the brakes.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the Detroit-based automaker is calling back 638,000 vehicles because of a defective sensor that may affect brake performance. GM said the recall is worldwide, but it is not clear how many of the affected SUVs and pickups were sold in Canada.

The recall involves the following:

• 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon SUVs.
• 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup trucks
• 2014-2018 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks

GM said the specific problem involves the wheel-speed sensor. If it fails, a software glitch in the electronic brake-control module may cause the driveline-protection system to activate. This is most likely to happen when the vehicle is in four-wheel drive or automatic mode and is being driven between 66 and 97 kilometres per hour.

If the driveline-protection system is functioning, the vehicle may cause unintended braking of the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, leading to a crash. No crashes or injuries have been reported as a result of this glitch, said GM.

Owners of vehicles affected by the recall will be notified. If you have one of these models, take it to a GM dealership or service centre where a software fix will be performed free of charge. GM suggests these specific owners drive their vehicles in standard two-wheel drive until the repair is applied.
