Smile cookie sales help keep kids healthy

It might seem difficult to digest, but children's nutrition in Chatham-Kent just got a boost from cookies.

Tim Hortons raised $15,600 from this year's Smile Cookie campaign held at the Tilbury, Ridgetown, Thamesville and Bothwell stores. That's nearly double last year's total of $8,800.

A cheque was recently presented to the Chatham Kent Nutrition Programs.

"The donation will go towards the purchase of food and equipment for nutrition programs in our Chatham Kent schools," said Allan Davies, student nutrition coordinator at the Chatham Kent Public Health Unit.

The popular Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign is held every September and raises money for 500 different charities across Canada. The full $1 from each cookie sold goes directly to chosen organizations.

The Chatham Kent Student Nutrition program serves more than 8,500 children at local schools with the help of almost 500 volunteers. The program offers healthy breakfasts, lunches or snacks to children who need them.
