Good natured students need help scaring hunger

A long-standing Halloween tradition continues across Chatham-Kent again this year.

The 14th annual "We Scare Hunger" campaign will have students from Ursuline, John McGregor, St. Ursula, Holy Family, St. Elizabeth, and St. Anne schools collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items door-to-door on Thursday to help feed the hungry.

Mitchell Fortuna of John McGregor said the food drive is fun for the students and helps those in need.

"We heard the food bank was running low so we decided why don't we go out with everyone and help do something on Halloween and it's also fun for everyone," said Fortuna.

Hanna Murray of Ursuline has been doing the food drive since grade 9 and said every little bit helps.

"In Grade 9, I didn't know what I could do since I'm just one person, but you can really do a lot by just doing a little," Murray said. "If everyone helps it's a good experience."

Alexis Alexander is in Grade 9 at John McGregor and knows how important it is to give back to her community.

"I'm a lucky person in my community and I know some people aren't and helping people really makes me feel good," said Alexander.

Food collected in Chatham, Pain Court and Blenheim will be donated to Chatham Outreach for Hunger and the Blenheim Food Bank. The Wallaceburg St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank will get all of the donations collected in Wallaceburg.

Brenda LeClair, executive director of Chatham Outreach for Hunger, said this Halloween food drive helps stock the shelves until Christmas.

Ursuline teacher Kathy Kearns said most routes in Chatham are covered this year. Victory Ford is helping transport all the donations to the respective food banks.
