Attempted murder suspect seeking another bail hearing

Court proceedings continue for a Wallaceburg man accused of trying to murder a young woman.

Michael Authier, 33, of Wallaceburg is accused of shooting an 18-year-old woman at a home on King Street and Albert Street on February 26, 2019.

A confirmation hearing was held at Chatham court on Monday to go over documents and details of the trial. A trial date hasn't been set yet but preliminary hearings are scheduled for November 27, December 3, and January 23 and 24. On Monday, Crown lawyer Scott Kerwin and defence lawyer Frank Retar confirmed to Justice Paul Kowalyshyn their readiness to go ahead as scheduled and confirmed the length of time required.

Authier is in custody and his lawyer is trying to get a bail hearing before November 21 when the confirmation hearing continues. Authier was released in March after his mother and father put up $25,000 to bail him out, but he was arrested again in June for drug possession and breaching the conditions of a previous probation order. Previously, the court heard that Authier has a history of breaking bail conditions.

The accused also pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of careless driving in August after being charged with dangerous driving. Drug possession charges were also dropped in August.

The female victim survived the shooting.

The case is under a publication ban and more details can't be released to the public until after the trial.
