Kitchen fire causes $10K in damage

Unattended cooking is to blame for a late-night house fire in Tilbury.

According to Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue, crews responded to reports of a fire around 11:30 p.m. Friday night on Mint Line. When firefighters arrived, they found a fire in the home's kitchen and called in firefighters stationed in Merlin to assist with the blaze.

Crews were quickly able to knock down the fire and prevent it from spreading.

“Unattended cooking is the number one cause of fires in Canada,” says Public Educator Whitney Burk. “Best practice is to always remain in the kitchen while cooking, especially when cooking at high temperatures.”

There was one person inside the house who was treated on the scene for minor injuries. Damage is estimated at around $10,000.
