401 pile-up victim identified as Ohio man

Provincial police have identified the person killed Friday in a five-vehicle pile-up on Highway 401 west of London as a 34-year-old Ohio man.

Benjamin Dionisio of Toledo, Ohio was killed when his vehicle, two tractor trailers, a five-tonne commercial truck, and a second passenger vehicle collided in the eastbound lanes of the highway between Iona Road and Union Road in Southwold Township around 11 a.m.

Elgin OPP have said the vehicles were trying to merge into one lane because of construction when the crash occurred.

Dionisio was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other people were rushed to hospital -- one by land ambulance, the other by air ambulance. As of Friday afternoon, both were listed in stable condition.

The crash closed the eastbound lanes of the 401 for several hours while police investigated the cause. Traffic was detoured off the highway causing significant backups into the evening.

Police continue to urge anyone with information about the collision who has not spoken to them to call 1-888-310-1122.

The investigation is ongoing.
