A doctor who was born and raised in Chatham-Kent will practice medicine in his hometown as a member of a couple of health organizations.
Dr. Shawn Segeren has officially joined the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) and the Chatham-Kent Family Health Team (CKFHT). Segeren is taking on patients from Dr. Jack Galbraith -- who is retiring -- and will also work as an emergency physician at the CKHA.
"We are thrilled that Dr. Segeren has chosen to practice in our Emergency Department after his time as a resident in Chatham-Kent," said CKHA Chief of Staff Dr. Pervez Faruqi, in a statement. "His knowledge and expertise in Emergency Medicine, as well as his familiarity with the community will greatly benefit our patients and families."
Segeren earned his Doctor of Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University in 2016 and received his Bachelor of Health Sciences, with honours, in 2011. The Chatham-Kent doctor developed an aptitude for medicine at an early age, according to a release from the CKHA. Sergeren started volunteering at the health alliance at just 13-years-old and completed the Schulich's MedQUEST Health Career Exploration Program as a high school student.
"I'm excited to be returning to my hometown. Chatham-Kent has provided me with so many great opportunities throughout my life, and I'm looking forward to giving back to the community as a Family and Emergency Physician," said Segeren.
Since Segeren will be taking on Galbraith's patients, he will not be accepting new patients. Residents in need of a primary care physician are advised to call Health Care Connect at 1-800-445-1822.
