UPDATE: Local schools will close Monday if strike proceeds

Parents who have children enrolled at schools within the St. Clair Catholic District School Board or the Lambton-Kent District School Board are encouraged to seek alternate child care arrangements in the event of a strike by support workers on Monday.

The Conseil scolaire catholique Providence is included in that, too.

The school boards recently updated their websites with an announcement in regards to the possible labour disruption. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) gave five days notice on Wednesday that its members would go on strike October 7 if a collective agreement isn't reached between the union and the province.

In response to the possible strike action, both the Catholic school board and the public school board have started moving forward with contingency plans.

A statement posted to the Catholic school board's website on Thursday reads that all schools within the St. Clair Catholic District School Board will be closed on Monday for an "indefinite period of time" if there is a strike.

"In our schools, CUPE represents custodians, early childhood educators, educational assistants, library and computer technicians, and secretaries," read a statement on the school board's website. "A full strike would mean none of these important supports for schools would be in place and the Board will not be able to safely operate our schools."

Parents are encouraged to keep checking the website for updates.

The Lambton-Kent District School Board posted on Thursday afternoon, public schools will also be closed on Monday if support staff hit the picket lines.

School board officials said they're still hopeful a fair agreement can be reached between both sides this weekend.
