Local EQAO results show work needs to be done

The provincial results from the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) are out and Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton public schools once again did not do very well.

However, local Catholic schools results were mostly above average.

In the 2018-2019 school year, local public school students in Grades 3, 6, and 9 finished below the provincial average in math, reading, and writing.

The Lambton Kent District School Board said it continues to focus on improving academic outcomes in the areas of literacy and mathematics.

“The Lambton Kent District School Board is committed to raising the bar for its students. We have challenged our schools to set high expectations and meet the needs of our students from Kindergarten to Grade 12,” said Director John Howitt. “We believe all students can learn and we can help support them to be successful and achieve an OSSD, regardless of their post-secondary plans.”

All the local Catholic school board EQAO results were above the provincial average, except in Grade 6 math.

“Junior math will be a system focus for St. Clair Catholic in 2019-2020,” said Laura Callaghan, Superintendent of Education (Elementary). “We have developed an action plan that outlines our strategies to improve student performance and student attitudes towards math.”

The school board said there was a one percentage point drop in primary math but in Grade 6, 10 St. Clair Catholic schools grew in their math scores. All other Grade 3, 6,and 9 math, reading, and writing results at the St. Clair Catholic District School Board were above the provincial average.

The school board said literacy scores continue to be strong.

“Our focus on mathematics has been to help students be successful in both the applied and academic streams, and we are pleased that students in the applied stream are exceeding the provincial average,” said Scott Johnson, Superintendent of Education (Secondary). "The Board’s action plan will include measures to intersect numeracy across all secondary subjects and to create a culture of resiliency and high expectations in all mathematics classrooms.

The Catholic school board added that data from all EQAO assessments is analyzed annually and used to develop improvement plans.
