All parents and caregivers are being reminded to keep children safe around the pool and waterways this summer.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said the hot summer weather is here and all parents and caregivers must take precautions to keep small children safe.
The OPP said back yard pools are the most common cause of drownings for children between one and four years old.
Police added the following tips and recommendations will go "a long way to save lives and ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer".
• Pool owners should erect a four4 foot high, four-sided fence with self-closing and latching gates.
• Always stay within sight and reach of young children.
• Learn how to swim or have an experienced swimmer with the child at all times, and someone who is trained in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
• Sign your children up for swimming lessons.
• Make sure you have the proper emergency equipment available, such as a phone near the pool to call 911, first aid kit, reach pole and a ring buoy with an attached rope.
Police also said a caregiver must be responsible, sober and confident at all times.
"Let's make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time around the pool or backyard pond this year," said the OPP.
