Numerous charges laid after man hits a police officer with his car

A 41-year-old Chatham man is in custody after an altercation on June 20 that resulted in an officer's foot being run over.

The incident began last Thursday afternoon when an officer noticed a man driving with expired licence plate tags on Longwoods Road.

After noticing the tags, the officer pulled over the driver and noticed he was drunk at the wheel. While attempting to administer a breathalyzer to the impaired man, the driver fled the scene. In doing so, he hit the officer and nearly struck another vehicle while pulling back onto the road, police said.

The officer did not require medical attention after the incident.

Due to the weather conditions and the high volume of traffic, the officer did not pursue the man for public safety reasons, said police.

A suspect was located by police Monday morning and was subsequently arrested.

A 41-year-old Chatham man is facing a number of charges including flight from police, assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, refusing a breath demand, driving with no insurance, and failing to comply with his release conditions.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing. His identity was not released by police.
