Suspicious activity call leads police to arrests

A tip from a concerned citizen led to a pair of arrests in Chatham Tuesday night.

Chatham-Kent police said they got the call at around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday after someone saw two men looking into cars on Coverdale Street in Chatham. The caller also provided a description of the men and officers were able to find two suspects who fit the description on McNaughton Avenue East.

Officers said one of the men, who was released from court in November last year, was found inside a variety store by himself. That was a direct violation of the conditions he was given when he was released from court at the end of November last year.

Police said they arrested him, but only after a short foot chase and a struggle. He was charged with failing to comply and resisting arrest and was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

The second man, who was spotted standing outside of the variety store, was also arrested. Police said he's accused of trying to stop officers from arresting the first man, so he was charged with obstructing police and later released with conditions and a future court date.

Woman charged with impaired driving

A 57-year-old Thamesville woman is charged with impaired driving in connection with a late night crash in that community.

Police said they were called to a single-vehicle crash on Jane Street in Thamesville at around 11 p.m. Tuesday, adding officers who arrived at the scene believed the driver was under the influence of alcohol, so she was taken back to police headquarters for breath tests.

The driver was later charged with having a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit. She was released from custody with a future court date.
