Local maple syrup harvest looking good

The maple sap harvest is not over yet but the president of the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers' Association says this year's yield looks promising.

In fact, the yield could match last season's mark.

"It looks that way right now. It's been a very good year. It's still a little early to tell, but from all indications, it's been a really good year," said President Brian Bainborough.

He said one of the ways to maximize yield is to maintain the maple trees.

Beyond that, Bainborough said families should attend local festivals to interact with those that produce the product.

"It's a great family experience. You're going to go experience the first agricultural crop of the year. Go see a sugar bush, do a little walk through it, see how it's made. Give yourself a family memory. Cherish that, for life," he said.

This week there are two maple-themed events are going on.

The Belmore Maple Syrup Festival is Thursday and Saturday and Holstein Maplefest is on Saturday and Sunday.

Both will feature pancake breakfasts, maple syrup booths and entertainment.
