Safety bulletin issued for Lake Erie shoreline

Strong wind gusts this week could make for some powerful waves along Lake Erie in Chatham-Kent and Elgin County.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued a safety bulletin for the shoreline Wednesday afternoon.

Officials with the LTVCA said wind speeds are expected to pick-up Thursday with gusts reaching up to 70 kilometres per hour. The windy conditions will die down slightly by Friday but gusts could still reach up to 45 km/hr. The strong wind gusts are expected to blow in from the east on Thursday but the wind will shift to a more southerly direction Friday. Windy conditions over the next couple of days may cause waves on Lake Erie to reach up to two metres in height.

Localized flooding is a possibility on Thursday, especially on Rose Beach Line and in the Wheatley Area. As wind patterns change on Friday, the flood risk will move towards Erie Shore Drive.

The LTVCA is advising residents to be cautious around the shoreline as it may be slippery and hazardous debris could end up on shore.

The safety bulletin will be in effect until April 13.
