VIA Rail train crash in Chatham turns fatal

A train crash in Chatham has taken a tragic turn.

Chatham-Kent police said a 54-year-old Chatham woman who was heading south on Keil Drive in a white SUV at around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, was involved in a crash with a VIA Rail train and later died from her injuries in the hospital.

Police said their initial investigation shows the vehicle was crossing the railway tracks when it was hit by the train, which was heading east. Investigators said the woman was the only person inside the SUV at the time of the crash.

Officers are withholding the woman's name out of respect for her family.

The CKPS Traffic Unit has taken over the investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Dan Carroll at [email protected] or 519-355-1092.
