Impaired driving charge laid after Highway 401 crossover crash

A 48-year-old Alberta man is charged with impaired driving in connection with a crash that prompted the closure of eastbound Highway 401 in Chatham-Kent early Monday morning.

Chatham-Kent OPP said the St. Albert man was behind the wheel of a vehicle that was heading west on Highway 401 near Bloomfield Road at around 2:45 a.m. Monday when it went off the road, into the median, and rolled over before eventually stopping in the eastbound lanes.

Officers who arrived at the scene said the man driving the vehicle showed signs of impairment, so they arrested him and took him to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The man was later charged with impaired driving.

Provincial police closed the eastbound lanes of the highway for about three hours between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Monday for their investigation and the cleanup.
