Man dead after crash on 401

A man is dead and two other people were injured after three separate incidents Monday on the eastbound lanes of Highway 401.

The first incident happened around 11 a.m. when a tractor-trailer caught fire on Highway 401 near Orford Road. The driver and lone occupant of the truck was attempting to extinguish the fire when one of the vehicle's tires exploded. As a result, he was transported to the hospital with what police called "life-altering injuries."

Soon after, around 2:30 p.m., a rear-end collision involving two tractor-trailers and an SUV occurred around the 116-kilometre marker.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the lone male driver of one of the tractor trailers involved was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released any further details on the victim. All other parties involved in the crash were not injured.

A second collision involving a tractor trailer and a pickup truck occurred around 3:45 p.m. near the 107-kilometre marker. The occupant of the pickup truck was transported to a local hospital by air ambulance suffering non-life threatening injuries while the driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 between Kent Bridge Road and Orford Road reopened just after midnight Tuesday morning.

The investigations are ongoing.
