Traffic blitz
Police are throwing the kitchen sink at drivers, ticketing 82 motorists on Thursday for various offences.According to officers, the Traffic Unit conducted a blitz to ensure roadway safety for the "big four" infractions which includes aggressive driving, seat belts, cell phones, and impairment. A release from police said 50 people were caught speeding, 16 weren't wearing seatbelts, 3 were distracted by a handheld device and another 16 were charged with various other infractions.
Officers are reminding drivers that traffic enforcement will continue throughout the year across the municipality as road safety is one of their three pillars of commitment to the citizens of Chatham-Kent.
Man charged with break and enter
A snowmobile was allegedly stolen from a garage on Erie Shore Drive Thursday morning.
Police were able to track it down and identified the man responsible. The 22-year-old from Charing Cross Road in Raleigh Township was arrested and charged with break and enter and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
He was released pending a future court date on March 22
Woman charged with fraud related offences
For the second time in the past two weeks, police have arrested someone who was allegedly caught using counterfeit bills in Chatham-Kent -- this time, it was US $100 notes.Police said a woman tried to use the bills at a variety store in Chatham to buy groceries and lottery tickets on three separate occasions last week. Officers identified the woman after being notified of her fraudulent activity and arrested her Thursday night.
The 25-year-old woman from Chatham was charged with multiple fraud-related offences. She was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
The Chatham-Kent Police are reminding business owners to check all US $100 bills because notes with serial number LGQ0322915 are counterfeit.
On February 20, a 27-year-old was allegedly caught paying for his McDonald's order with an alleged counterfeit $20.
