Weekend fundraising walk exceeds $25K goal

The third year for the Coldest Night of the Year walk turned out to be its best yet.

Al Baker, network coordinator for Neighbour Link said over 100 walkers took to the streets of Chatham this weekend to raise money for the organization.

"At 10:40 a.m. on walk day, we reached our goal, 100% of $25,000, and then more came in after that," said Baker. "$27,143 is the current total, but that may go up after they do the final tally this month."

Baker said all the money raised will go to support NeighbourLink and their numerous programs.

"Primarily what we do is provide free transportation for people who can't afford it. We also do a lot of work with shut-ins, providing them with friendly visits," said Baker. "Basic family budgeting, we coach people on how to manage their finances better."

They had 108 walkers in total participate on Saturday, February 23.

"Anything over 100 is great," said Baker. "The key to our success this year was people gave more, and it seems this year more than others, people really caught the vision of what we are trying to do here."

Baker added that they are planning on putting the walk on again next year.
