Woman swims to safety after crash into Thames River

A 33-year-old London woman was able to escape serious injury after a vehicle slid into the Thames River just west of Chatham Sunday night.

Chatham-Kent police said the woman was driving a vehicle on Town Line Road in Dover Township when she lost control of her vehicle, sliding off the road and into the water.

Officers said she was able to escape the vehicle and safely swim to shore.

The vehicle was still under water Monday morning and was expected to be recovered by Chatham-Kent fire and emergency services staff.

The total damages are estimated at $7,000.
