Dresden's hockey hot spot could soon include a lasting tribute to a former resident who made a name for himself as a tough guy in the NHL.
Chatham-Kent Mayor Randy Hope is asking his fellow council members to vote in favour of renaming the arena in Dresden the "Ken Houston Lambton-Kent Memorial Agricultural Centre".
In the motion, which will be formally introduced at Monday night's CK Council meeting, Hope said he is making the request after he was "approached by a large number Dresden and area residents during the recent Dresden Exhibition seeking a permanent and public acknowledgement of the legacy of Mr. Houston."
The motion also notes the tribute would recognize Houston for his commitment to Chatham-Kent and for giving "unselfishly of his time and effort to a long list of local charitable and community events".
Houston died in March at 64 years of age after a battle with cancer.
He played with several NHL teams during his professional career in the 1970s and 1980s, including the Calgary Flames, Los Angeles Kings, Atlanta Flames, and the Washington Capitals.
